It has been two weeks since Tom and Gilly last saw Nobody, and they are worried that by helping Beatrice Ellen move on, they will never see their ghostly friend again. Noticing their children’s dour mood, Peter and Jane resolve to do something special at the weekend to cheer everyone up. That night, Gilly is woken by crying; finding Nobody in the upstairs hallway, sobbing behind a curtain, she takes him to her room to find out what is wrong. Tom joins them in time to learn that the reason Nobody is miserable is not the loss of Beatrice Ellen - instead he feels left out of the family, having seen how close his friends are to their parents. Resolving to cheer up their spectral friend, Gilly and Tom turn down their parents’ offer of a weekend away, and try to entertain Nobody with Tom’s chemistry set. Peter and Jane are still concerned, so they decide to throw a children’s party, and get Tom and Gilly to ring round all their friends to invite them over. When Nobody hears that the party, he sees it as an opportunity to chat with Tom and Gilly’s parents; and because the party is to be fancy dress, he can pass himself off as real…
